  Chapter One

Raine practically jumped out of Agent Connor’s car when they pulled to a stop in front of the school. She had enjoyed her time with Uncle Jerry, but she was excited to be back with her friends. Evie and Sara rushed forward and pulled her into a tight hug. Raine noticed Evie had some buttercream on her cheek.

“You’ve been back for an hour and you’re already baking?” Raine laughed. “Did you have a good summer? I missed you guys.”

“I’ve been back for three hours.” Evie grinned and wiped the buttercream from her cheek. “I wanted to make cupcakes to celebrate having you guys back again. I found a recipe for the most amazing lemon meringue cupcakes. I haven’t mastered the meringue on the top, so they’re just lemon buttercream. They’re so good, though!”

“I’ve already eaten two.” Sara gave Raine a shameless look. “Did you do much over summer?”

“I hung out with Cameron and William for a week. That was cool. Uncle Jerry wasn’t quite ready for me to go and stay with them, so they stayed in a hotel and we hung out together. I showed them all my favorite haunts. None of them compare to the kemana and here, though.”

“We need to go to Bubble and Fizz tomorrow!” Sara picked up Raine’s bag which Agent Connor had removed from the car. “Come on. I want every detail. Adrien and Philip are back and they’re probably eating the cupcakes.”

“Thanks for the ride, Agent Connor.” Raine waved to him as she was pulled along by Sara. “I’ve told you everything.”

“Oh, come on!” Evie nudged Raine. “You spent a week with Cameron.”

Raine blushed. She had enjoyed spending that time with him, and William had really relaxed and found new confidence.

They headed inside and moved around the groups of students who had been dropped off and had begun to haul their luggage inside. Raine watched a particularly small freshman try to carry a suitcase almost as big as she was. Several others rushed to help her and greeted her as they lifted her suitcase and pointed to the front door. Adrien and Philip jogged down the stairs toward them. They greeted Raine with light hugs before the elf took her bags and carried them up the stairs.

“How was summer?” Philip glanced over his shoulder. “Did anything exciting happen?”

“It was peaceful.” Raine smiled. “It was the break I needed.”

“Cameron told us about the amazing froyo place you took him to.” Philip held out his hand to take Raine’s bag from Adrien and give him a break. “I did a lot of charity work. It was amazing. I got to really help people and saw firsthand the difference my efforts made.”

“I put in plenty of training. After the…incident I wanted to really improve my combat magic and overall game.” Adrien handed Philip the backpack. “I talked my grandmother into giving me some of her pastry recipes, though, Evie. I’ll give them to you later.”

Evie’s face split into a brilliant grin. “Thank you. That’s amazing.”

  The elf shrugged. “No worries.”

“I traveled a little with my older sister. We went down to Mexico, and it was absolutely incredible.” Sara hooked her arm through Raine’s. “I’ve also started learning pastels and watercolors. They don’t come as easily to me as acrylic and oil do, but I’m really enjoying experimenting. I find that I get a very different feel with them, and that means I put different emotions and focus into those projects.”

“Wow, that sounds amazing.” Adrien shifted the weight of Raine’s
bag. “I’m glad you have your art. You’re really talented.”

Sara walked a little taller and felt pride swell within her. She put far more work and practice into her art than she let on and it felt good to hear that it had all paid off.

Adrien and Philip paused at the doorway of the girls’ room. They weren’t really supposed to be there to begin with and they didn’t want to push their luck too much. Raine left her bag to be unpacked later. She wanted to enjoy time with her friends first.

Cameron bounded down the hallway and Raine had barely stepped out of her room when she felt his strong arms wrap around her. She leaned into him and wound her arms around his neck to rest her head on his shoulder. The summer had felt long without him around and she was glad to have physical contact again.

Evie took the lead with William, who still tried to find his confidence with his new girlfriend. She pulled him close and kissed his cheek.

“I missed you.” She ran her fingers through his hair. “Did you have a good summer?”

“I had the most amazing time with Cameron. The pack let me run with them one night. I had to stop after a while as they’re much quicker than me, but I stargazed and felt a peace like I’ve never felt before.” He smiled at Evie. “I missed you too. I know I’m bad at expressing stuff, but I missed the quiet moments we have together.”

“Are there any of those cupcakes left?” Philip put his hands in his pockets and tried to hide the awkwardness he felt. “Your cupcakes are the best I’ve ever tasted, Evie.”

“Evie baked cupcakes?” Cameron’s ears pricked as he put his arm around Raine’s waist. “Wait, you already baked cupcakes? I thought you got here like an hour before us?”

Evie shrugged and leaned against William.

“I love baking, and it seemed like a nice celebration to see everyone again.”

“Well, it sounds like we have to find these cupcakes while there’s still a chance.” Adrien started down the hallway. “There are still some left, right?”

  Evie and Sara laughed.

“I saved two each for everyone.” Sara tucked her hands in her pockets. “They’re really good. You’re lucky I didn’t sneak them away to eat all by myself.”

“I think the real question here is whether there really is a better way to celebrate our reunion than a batch of Evie’s cupcakes.” Philip looked back at the group. “Because I really can’t think of anything.”

“Brownies,” William and Cameron said at the same time.

  Everyone laughed.

“You’re rubbing off on each other.” Raine looked up at Cameron. “It’s kind of adorable.”

He wrinkled his nose as he didn’t particularly enjoy being thought of as adorable.

“I guess I could bake some brownies…really nice gooey, chewy brownies.” Evie shrugged and smirked. “Maybe.”

“What do we need to bribe you with?” William squeezed her hand gently. “You know we’ll do about anything for your baking.”

She looked mischievous. “I’ll give it some thought.”

  Chapter Two

“We don’t need a stealth spell to go down to the kemana now,” Sarah said. “This means we need to go to Bubble and Fizz before classes start tomorrow.”

“I liked the stealth spells.” William smiled ruefully. “They added a bit of fun.”

“It’ll be nice to be able to go there freely, though.” Evie hooked her arm around William’s. “Do you want to share a pizza with me? No pineapple!”

“Sounds good.” William thought for a moment. “Pepperoni and Parma ham?”

“Perfect.” Evie looked at the others. “Are you guys going sweet or savory?”

They strolled across the grounds toward the cave and the kemana entrance.

“I’d love a banana split,” said Cameron. “I haven’t had one in years.”

“Each to their own.” Philip wrinkled his nose. “I think I need one of their sundaes. I’m not sure which flavor yet.”

“Oh yes! I swear I’ve dreamt of their sundaes.” Raine leaned into Cameron. “I want something tart and sweet—lime and dark chocolate, maybe.”

“You know, that might make a really good cupcake flavor, or maybe some mini tarts.” Evie chewed her bottom lip as she tried to formulate the recipe. “I think tarts would work better if you used a thick chocolate ganache with lime rind, maybe?”

“Will I lose you to the kitchen?” William smiled at her. “You have a glow about you when you think about new recipes.”

“You could always come and join me.” Evie nudged him gently. “I’m sure the pixies would be happy to help teach you.”

“I just might.” William stepped back and waited for the others. “I’m open to learning new things.”

Evie grinned and looked forward to sharing her passion with him. He had made great improvements with his potions and she had high hopes for his skills as a baker.

The group made their way into the kemana without a stealth spell for the first time. Raine felt a little weird as she strolled casually down the stairs without the slight weight of the spell. She looked around at the underground city and drank in the beautiful array of colors and the slight tingle of magic as they stepped into the city proper.

Cameron breathed deeply and smiled. The kemana had come to have strong positive associations for him. He took in the scents of magic, life, and a wide variety of different foods. A feeling of warm happiness filled him, and he held Raine a little closer. They had been through so much during the last year and he couldn’t wait to see where this new semester took them.

Philip and Sara led the way through the crowds of witches bartering over crystals and Kilomea whispering something that sounded philosophical to Raine’s ear. A pair of shifters with amber eyes strutted down the middle of the walkway toward them. Cameron rolled his eyes. They looked to be relatively new and had the insecurity that came with that. He came from a long line of shifters and didn’t feel the need to remind everyone what he was. These shifters were older than him but were probably only second generation. Their families would have been changed by the dark wizard families and he hoped they grew to become comfortable in their own skin. Being a shifter was something he took great pride in.

They meandered their way through the streets that overflowed with shops and life and looked casually in windows. Evie paused at a shop selling potted plants.

“Oh! Look, there are some that can’t be killed.” She looked at Raine. “We could get one for our room.”

“The blue one is pretty.” Sara pointed at the small plant with delicate blue flowers. “That could fit on our window sill too.”

“We’ll get it on the way back.” Raine turned toward the bookshop where Bubble and Fizz was. “I’d feel a bit weird having a plant on the table while we ate.”

“Oh, ouch, maybe not.” Evie pointed at the price tag. “I misread it. I thought it had fewer zeros.”

  Raine raised an eyebrow.

“People must really love unkillable plants.” She took a few steps down the walkway. “Should we head straight to Bubble and Fizz now?”

“I think so. I’m dying for my pizza.” William glanced at the others. “But I’ll live if someone wants to keep window shopping.”

“No, we’re good.” Philip smiled. “I’m definitely window-shopped out.”

“Agreed.” Sara walked down the walkway. “And there will be other cool little things for our room.”

They continued to the bookshop and Adrien walked immediately to the book that would open the entrance into Bubble and Fizz. They descended the stairs and were happy to find the cafe bursting to the brim. Raine had hoped they found plenty of business to keep them going. She didn’t want to lose their little hangout.

The fairy led them to the last available booth where a bowl of mixed M&Ms waited for them. Sara had barely sat down when she took a handful.

“Dude, they have every flavor.” She put another two in her mouth. “There’s chocolate, crispy, mint, caramel—they’r
e so good.”

Raine took a few and offered them to Cameron. They picked at the M&Ms while Adrien decided what he wanted to order. He settled on a decadent triple chocolate and mint sundae. Sara scooted a little closer to him.

  “Talk to me.”

The elf looked at her with a raised eyebrow. “I’m sorry?”

“You’ve been quiet. So, talk to me.”

Adrien laughed. “I haven’t had anything to say. I’m fine.”

Sara narrowed her eyes. “Are you sure?”

  “One hundred percent.”

She continued to look at him for a long moment before she finally smiled and let him be.

“You know, I’m actually looking forward to classes starting.” Philip took another few M&Ms. “I think we’ll start digging into the really cool stuff this year.”

“Don’t forget the extra dark magic classes we have to take.” Raine thanked the fairy for her sundae. “It’ll be a really busy year.”
